Dermal fillers are injections of a hyaluronic acid gel placed under the skin to restore lost volume, shape features such as the lips, cheeks and jawline, and soften deep folds. What can dermal fillers treat?
Fillers add or replace volume. They do not relax muscles, so lines caused by movement, such as forehead and frown lines, are usually treated with anti-wrinkle injections instead.
- Lips: more volume, a clearer border, or better balance between the upper and lower lip.
- Cheeks and mid-face: replacing volume lost with age, which can also soften the folds from nose to mouth.
- Under-eye hollows (tear troughs): reducing the shadow that makes you look tired. This is a delicate area and not everyone is suitable.
- Chin and jawline: a more defined jaw edge and profile.
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: often treated by restoring cheek support first, rather than filling the fold alone.
If your concern is dull or dehydrated skin rather than volume, skin boosters may suit you better.
Are all fillers the same?
No. Softer gels are used in the lips and under the eyes, where the face moves a lot; firmer gels are used in the cheeks, chin and jawline, where more support is needed. The doctor chooses the product for each area.
What happens at the appointment?
- The doctor looks at your face, asks what bothers you and checks your medical history, medicines and previous treatments.
- You agree a plan: which areas, roughly how much product, and what result is realistic.
- The skin is cleaned and numbing cream may be applied; most fillers also contain a local anaesthetic.
- The filler is injected with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. This usually takes under an hour.
- Some change shows on the day. The final result is judged once swelling has settled, usually after one to two weeks.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Usually 6–18 months, depending on the area, the product and how quickly your body breaks it down. Areas that move more, such as the lips, tend to wear off sooner.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) if the result is not right or a problem occurs. A top-up before the filler has fully worn off may need less product.

- Swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising at the injection sites
- Lumps, unevenness or asymmetry
- Infection or delayed inflammatory reactions
- Rarely, filler blocking a blood vessel (vascular occlusion), which can damage the skin or, very rarely, affect vision; this is a medical emergency
