Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth, protecting a tooth that is too weak for a filling alone and restoring its shape so you can chew normally. At our Al Qusais, Dubai clinic, our dentist fits crowns after root canal treatment, on cracked teeth, and where a large old filling leaves little natural tooth.
Which type of crown is right for me?
Zirconia
A strong, tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal inside. It suits back teeth that take heavy chewing forces and front teeth where appearance matters, and it is a common choice after root canal treatment.
Porcelain fused to metal
A metal base covered in tooth-coloured porcelain: a long-established, lower-cost option. In some people a thin grey line can show at the gum over time.
The dentist recommends a type for your tooth and explains the difference in look and cost before you decide.
How is a crown made and fitted?
- Assessment. The dentist examines the tooth, usually with an X-ray, to check that the root and surrounding bone can hold a crown.
- Preparing the tooth. Under local anaesthetic, a thin layer of the tooth is shaped so the crown can sit over it.
- Measuring. The shape of the tooth and your bite are recorded, and the shade is matched to the neighbouring teeth.
- Temporary crown. You leave with a temporary crown while the dental laboratory makes the final one.
- Fitting. At the second visit the crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented in place.
How do I look after a crown?
Brush and floss around it as you would a natural tooth. The crown cannot decay, but the edge where it meets the tooth can, so check-ups still matter. If a crown comes loose, keep it and bring it in promptly: an undamaged crown can often be cemented back.
Crowns with a root canal, and crowns on implants
A tooth that has had root canal treatment becomes more brittle, which is why a crown usually follows. Where a tooth is missing altogether, a crown can be fitted on a dental implant, planned with our oral surgeon who places the implant.
How much does a dental crown cost in Dubai?
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns start from AED 450 per tooth and zirconia crowns from AED 800; see all prices.
Risks and what to expect
What to expect
A crown usually takes two visits: one to prepare the tooth, take a scan or impression and fit a temporary crown, and one to fit the final crown. The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia. Crowns last many years with good care but can need replacing.
Possible side effects and risks
- Sensitivity or tenderness for a few days after the tooth is prepared
- A temporary crown can come loose before the final one is fitted
- The nerve of a heavily filled tooth can become inflamed and need root canal treatment
- Chipping of the porcelain, or a crown coming loose and needing re-cementing
- Decay or gum problems at the edge of the crown if it is not kept clean
- With porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, a thin grey line can show at the gum over time
Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. At your consultation your clinician will explain the risks that apply to you, and the alternatives, before you decide.

Dental Crowns — Frequently Asked Questions
Zirconia is tooth-coloured all the way through and very strong; porcelain-fused-to-metal costs less but can show a thin grey line at the gum over time. The dentist recommends one for your tooth and explains the difference before you decide.
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and record its shape, when you get a temporary crown, and one to fit the final crown made by the laboratory.
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic before it is shaped, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity or tenderness for a few days afterwards is common and usually settles.
Many years with good brushing, flossing and regular check-ups. Crowns can chip, wear or come loose over time, and decay at the edge can mean a crown needs replacing, so the dentist checks it at each visit.
Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side and call us. A crown that is undamaged can often be cemented back in one short visit; re-cementing costs AED 200. If it is cracked, the dentist explains whether it needs replacing.
From AED 450 per tooth for porcelain-fused-to-metal and from AED 800 for zirconia. A root canal together with a zirconia crown starts from AED 1,200 per tooth. The final price is confirmed after your free first consultation.
