Children's Dentistry

Children's dentistry is check-ups and treatment for babies' and children's teeth, done with more patience and in shorter visits than adult care. At our Al Qusais, Dubai clinic, our dentist sees children for check-ups, fluoride, fillings and root canal treatment on baby teeth, and our specialist orthodontist checks how the jaws and bite are developing.

Why do baby teeth matter?

Baby teeth hold the space for the adult teeth growing underneath. A baby tooth lost early to decay can let the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, which can crowd the adult teeth later.

Decay in a baby tooth can also hurt and become infected, just as in an adult tooth. Treating it, rather than waiting for it to fall out, keeps your child comfortable and keeps the space.

What treatments do we offer children?

  • Check-ups. The dentist checks every tooth for early decay, looks at the gums and the bite, and shows you and your child how to brush the areas that are easy to miss.
  • Fluoride application. A fluoride gel painted on the teeth helps strengthen the enamel against decay. It takes a few minutes; your child should not eat or drink for a short time afterwards.
  • Fillings. Small cavities are repaired with tooth-coloured fillings. Catching them early keeps treatment short.
  • Root canal treatment on baby teeth. When decay reaches the nerve of a baby tooth, cleaning and sealing the inside can save it until it is ready to fall out. If a tooth cannot be saved, the dentist explains whether the space needs to be held open.

How can you make the visit easier?

  • Talk about the visit simply and positively; avoid words like "hurt" or "needle".
  • Book a time when your child is usually rested, not just before a nap or a meal.
  • Stay with your child and tell the dentist what worries them. A first visit can be just a look and a count of their teeth.

When is an early orthodontic check useful?

Some bite problems are easier to treat while a child is still growing. Our orthodontist explains that widening a narrow upper jaw is easiest around the ages of 10 to 12, before the bones of the palate fuse. If you notice crowding, a crossbite or mouth breathing, read about early orthodontics for children.

How much does children's dentistry cost?

Fluoride application is AED 200 per session, and root canal treatment on a baby tooth starts from AED 400 for a front tooth or AED 600 for a back tooth; see all prices.

Risks and what to expect

What to expect

Visits are kept short and explained to your child step by step. Check-ups and fluoride take minutes; fillings and root canal treatment on baby teeth are done under local anaesthesia, sometimes over more than one visit if a child needs a break.

Possible side effects and risks

  • Numbness after local anaesthesia can make a child bite or chew the lip or cheek; watch them until it wears off
  • Sensitivity or soreness for a day or two after a filling
  • A treated baby tooth can still become infected and may then need to be removed
  • Fluoride gel is not meant to be swallowed; swallowing a little can cause a brief upset stomach

Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. At your consultation your clinician will explain the risks that apply to you, and the alternatives, before you decide.

Children's Dentistry — Frequently Asked Questions

Once the first teeth appear is a good time for a first, gentle visit, and then regular check-ups. Early visits help children get used to the dental chair before they ever need treatment.

Yes. When decay reaches the nerve of a baby tooth, the inside can be cleaned and sealed so the tooth stays until it falls out naturally. It is done under local anaesthetic, sometimes over more than one short visit.

Tell us when you book. You can stay with your child, and a first visit can be just a look and a count of their teeth. Talking about the visit simply and positively at home also helps.

Fluoride gel application is AED 200 per session and takes a few minutes. The dentist advises how often your child needs it after checking their teeth. Your first consultation is free.
