Invisalign straightens teeth with a series of clear, removable aligners made from a 3D scan of your mouth; each set is worn for one to two weeks and moves the teeth a small, planned step. What can clear aligners treat?
Most mild to moderate alignment problems in adults and teenagers can be treated with aligners, including:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite, underbite and crossbite, depending on how severe they are
- Open bite, where the front teeth do not meet
- Teeth that have moved back after earlier orthodontic treatment
Severe bite problems, or a jaw that needs surgical correction, are often better treated with fixed braces. The orthodontist tells you at the consultation which option suits your teeth.
How does Invisalign treatment work?
- Consultation and 3D scan. The orthodontist examines your teeth and bite and takes a digital scan instead of putty impressions. Any decay or gum problem is treated first.
- Your treatment plan. The movement of each tooth is planned on screen, and you see a 3D simulation of the planned result before any aligners are made. The final result can differ from the simulation.
- Fitting. The aligners usually arrive in two to three weeks. Where needed, small tooth-coloured attachments are bonded to some teeth so the aligners can grip, and you are shown how to put them in, take them out and clean them.
- Check-ups. Every 6–8 weeks the orthodontist checks that your teeth are following the plan and gives you your next aligners. Orthodontic appointments are currently on Sundays.
- Refinement and retainers. Some cases need a few extra aligners at the end. Retainers then hold the teeth in place. Some people choose teeth whitening once the aligners are finished.
How long does Invisalign take?
Mild to moderate cases usually take 6 to 12 months; more complex cases take longer. The timeline depends on how far your teeth need to move and on wearing the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink and brush: wearing them less slows treatment and can change the result.

Aligners are worn 20–22 hours a day and changed every one to two weeks, with reviews every 6–8 weeks. How long treatment takes depends on your case and on how consistently the aligners are worn. Retainers are needed afterwards to keep the result.
Possible side effects and risks
- Pressure or soreness for a day or two after each new aligner
- Temporary changes to speech while you get used to the aligners
- Gum irritation, decay or gum disease if teeth and aligners are not kept clean
- Teeth moving back (relapse) if retainers are not worn as advised
- Some cases need refinement aligners or a switch to fixed braces
