Wrinkle Treatment

Wrinkle treatment softens lines on the face, most often with anti-wrinkle injections that relax the muscles behind forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet. At our Al Qusais, Dubai clinic, our DHA-licensed aesthetic physician, Dr. Keerthana Gopal, works out what is causing your lines and may combine injections with fillers, peels or microneedling.

What causes wrinkles?

Most lines fall into two groups, and each is treated differently.

• Dynamic lines appear when you move: forehead lines, the frown lines between the brows ("11 lines") and crow's feet. Repeated muscle movement creases the skin, and as collagen declines the crease stays visible at rest.
• Static lines and folds are there at rest, such as the folds from nose to mouth and marionette lines. They come mainly from volume loss and thinner skin.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

A purified protein, botulinum toxin type A, is injected in small amounts into chosen muscles. It temporarily reduces the nerve signal, so the muscle relaxes and the skin above it smooths.

The doctor uses small doses to soften lines while keeping your natural expression. Common areas are the forehead, frown lines and crow's feet; other uses, such as the jaw (masseter) muscle or underarm sweating, are discussed at consultation.

What happens at the visit?

1. The doctor asks about your concerns, health and medicines, and watches how your face moves.
2. You agree the plan and the cost before any treatment.
3. The skin is cleaned and the injections take a few minutes.
4. You can usually go back to your day; the doctor explains aftercare before you leave.
5. The effect starts after a few days and is fullest at about two weeks, when a review can be arranged if needed.

How long do results last?

Anti-wrinkle injections usually last three to four months, so treatment is repeated when movement returns. Fillers, peels and microneedling follow their own schedules. Results vary from person to person.
