Skin Boosters
Skin boosters are fine injections of hyaluronic acid placed just under the skin so it looks more hydrated, smoother and fresher. At our Al Qusais, Dubai clinic, they are planned and injected by our aesthetic physician, Dr. Keerthana Gopal. Unlike a filler, they do not add volume or change the shape of the face.
Who are skin boosters for?
- Skin that looks dull, dry or tired despite a good skincare routine
- Fine, crepey lines on the face or neck
- People who want a subtle change rather than a different look
Skin boosters do not treat deep wrinkles, sagging or acne scars. For those the doctor may suggest dermal fillers, wrinkle treatment or microneedling.
How is the treatment done?
The doctor first looks at your skin and asks about your health, medicines and previous treatments. Tell her if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a skin infection or cold sores in the area, or take blood-thinning medicine.
The skin is cleaned and a numbing cream may be applied; allow time at the start for it to work. The product is then placed in tiny amounts across the area with a fine needle or a cannula. Avoid make-up, heavy exercise and saunas for the rest of the day.
Because there is no heat or peel, skin boosters can be done in the summer months, which is why Dr. Keerthana uses them as one of her summer treatments.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually two or three sessions a few weeks apart, then occasional maintenance, because the body gradually breaks down hyaluronic acid. The doctor sets the number for your skin, and changes are gradual and differ from person to person. The price is given at your consultation, after the doctor has assessed your skin.
Risks and what to expect
What to expect
A course is usually two or three sessions a few weeks apart, then maintenance sessions, because the hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down by the body. Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within a day or two.
Possible side effects and risks
- Redness, swelling, tenderness and small bumps at the injection points for a day or two
- Bruising, which can take a week or more to fade
- Uneven or visible lumps that can take longer to settle
- Infection or a cold sore flare-up in people who get them
- Rarely, an allergic reaction, or the product blocking a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment
Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. At your consultation your clinician will explain the risks that apply to you, and the alternatives, before you decide.

No. Both use hyaluronic acid, but a filler adds volume or shape to an area, such as the lips or cheeks, while a skin booster is spread finely under the skin to improve hydration and texture.

Most people feel small pricks. A numbing cream can be applied first, and the product is placed with a fine needle or a cannula. Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within a day or two.
It depends on the product and how many sessions your skin needs. The doctor gives you the price at your consultation after assessing your skin, and your first consultation is free.
